Rob and I haven't owned a microwave for sixteen years. Actually, that's not true. We haven't used a microwave for sixteen years, even though we did own one for a short time. When we originally moved in together, our home was far too small to accommodate a microwave, so we didn't buy one. Our first house came with a microwave, but we hadn't used one for so long we didn't really know what to do with it, so we stored it in the laundry room in the basement and used it occasionally to make popcorn.
We eventually sold the house, and the microwave with it, and haven't replaced it since. I have no idea what I would use a science oven for, but I'm starting to think it might be time to add a toaster oven to my collection of small appliances. Here's why:
- I like the idea of having a back-up oven for baked potatoes and other small foods.
- We love melted cheese on pretty much everything; a toaster oven would make this possible without having to preheat the larger oven first.
- It's easier for the boys to cook food for themselves, or heat things from the freezer (like the chicken fingers above) in a toaster oven.
- I'm sure we'll conserve energy by using a toaster oven instead of the big oven for all of the small baking/cooking/heating jobs.
So, here's my question: do you use/have a microwave? Could you imagine not having one? Do you live without any other modern convenience? Should I get a toaster oven? Do you have any brand recommendations? I've been doing research for three months, and think I may have narrowed down my options, but would love to hear what you have to say on the subject.
