I’m pretty sure that every food blogger has a favourite food blogger, and Jenny Rosenstrach is definitely one of mine. Long time readers have probably seen more than five dozen links to her posts over the years, and regardless of whether she’s spewing on her family’s favourite twenty-minute dinner, suggested rules for easy entertaining, or offering recommendations for books for tweens, you can bet I’m taking notes.
So naturally, when I opened my mailbox a few weeks ago and found a copy of Jenny’s latest book, Dinner: The Playbook tucked into an oversized cardboard envelope, I was thrilled. The book is based on the time Jenny and her husband, Andy, challenged themselves to make 30 new dinners for their family, encouraging their two daughters to try them all. The project forever changed the landscape of their dinner table, and as a result their daughters became more adventurous eaters.
I’ve already mentioned that my meal planning is in need of a makeover, and this book is going to help me jumpstart my dinners in the coming month. It’s not like I don't know what to serve my family each night, but like everyone else, I’m always in need of new inspiration, and I’ve certainly found it within the 220 pages of this colourful, compact 30-day plan designed to help you master the art of the family meal. A few of the recipes I’ve designated as must-make are: Hoisin turkey burgers, steak sandwiches with Gruyère, slow-cooker Korean short ribs, chicken parm meatballs, and maple candy pork chops.
In addition to the meal motivation, the book is also chock full of time-saving tips, strategies for feeding picky eaters, rules for introducing new dishes to the dinner table, and ten meal plans to help you get started. In short, if you're feeding a family you can't help but benefit from this book.
