As I type this, I’m sitting at my dining table staring at a stack of to-do lists; there’s one for my work projects, one for some planned summer fun, one for Jackson’s upcoming long weekend away, one for the vacation we’ll hopefully be taking next month, and one for the Canada Day party we’re hosting tomorrow.
I honestly can’t recall why Rob and I decided we would invite our entire extended family, plus a few friends, for a BBQ to celebrate our national holiday way back in 2004, but we did, and we’ve been hosting the annual celebration ever since. It’s easily one of my favourite days of the year, and is a must-attend event for those we know as well. There’s a classic cookout with hamburgers, hot dogs and an epic amount of toppings, a buffet of salads and sides provided by my sister and sisters-in-law, appetizers and desserts made by yours truly, and a self-serve bar that’s a cinch to put together.
We ramp up the festivities with backyard games like Jenga and water balloon fights, and I hear a rumour that my teenagers are setting up a “water” pong table so they can teach the younger cousin’s how to play. The highlight of the night though is always the Canada Day trivia quiz I put together. We pit the guys against the girls, and the groups take 30 minutes or so to answer the challenging questions I come up with.
While it might sound like a lot of work, truth be told, it’s a party that puts itself together, mostly because we’ve been doing it for so long. That’s the secret to having family traditions or rituals: the more you repeat them, the easier they are to execute.
I like knowing that my kids will always remember our Canada Day parties, and that all nine of my nieces and nephews have never spent July 1st any other way (none of them are over the age of 12, which means they’ve been coming to our party each year since they were born).
All of this is to say that we really like to celebrate Canada Day, and in honour of that, I have a lovely giveaway for you today. This set is to help you with your summer celebrations, whatever they may be. My friends at Indigo Books adore entertaining as much as I do, and they’ve kindly offered a package of three table-top items from their home collection to help you with your gatherings this season. I’m adding in a signed copy of my cookbook, which happens to include a backyard barbecue and a pie party, both of which are ideal for the summer months.
Entering is simple: just leave a comment letting me know your favourite summer ritual or family tradition. A name will be selected at random on Sunday July 5th, and I’ll come back and update this post with the winner’s name. Good luck to all… have a wonderful week!
Update: The giveaway is now closed. Congratulations to Jacqueline and thanks to all for entering!
